Materialism

Even though there are lots of materialistic people, there are also different people who are not.  Several reasons why would be, that the person thinks that they can get what the person wants by being something that they probably are not, they would want to get someone they really love, but in the end they still fail, and the person would go many lengths just to get this one item that they have been wanting in a while.  Being a materialistic person sometimes would not be a good charateristic about themselves.

To start off, a materialistic person would want one of three things, fame, fortune, or money, but in order to get that they would have to go beyond their comfort zone, and way past that point as well.  An example would be the story The Great Gatsby, the story describes how this one man was on the verge of marrying this one woman named Daisy, but he had to go to this one war, and she was devastated, but he found out that when he was coming back she was getting married to this other man.  The story goes on talking about how he became famous, and made many different parties at his mansion, and how he tried so hard to impress Daisy enough to get her back.  Then, he gets shot by the friend of the man that was going to marry Daisy.

Secondly, the person would do anything to stay in love with their significant other. Someone could say that they have something for this person, but the item would be gone in about a few weeks, and they have only some change left for that item, but they were also wanting to take their significant other to dinner, too, the person would go beyond their own path, just so they could get enough money, or something.

Lastly, the person would go many lengths to get what they want.  A good explanation would be from Susan B. Anthony “I stand before you tonight under indictment for the alleged crime of having voted at the last presidential election, without having a lawful right to vote,” Susan B. Anthony was trying to get the women a right to vote, and she was not materialistic, but she went through so much to get what she wanted.

As one can see, this would could go through so many different reasons why there are so many of these materialistic people, but that makes no reason for them to die for their materialistic behavior, but that would not make things better, but sometimes in life people have to go that extra mile to get the job done like Susan B. Anthony, Jonathon Swift, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Author Willa Cather embedded literary devices, such as metaphors, similes, and personification, within her writing.

"As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the colour of wine-stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running."

"The grave, with its tall red grass that was never mowed, was like a little island."

"Winter comes down savagely over a little town on the prairie.  The wind that sweeps in from the open country strips away all the leafy screens that hide one yard from another in summer, and the houses seem to draw closer together.  The roofs, that looked so far away across the green treetops, now stare you in the face, and they are so much uglier than when their angles were softened by vines and shrubs.

The amosphere between the characters change from time to time, like when Antonia claimed she did not have time to learn, because she works like a man.  Then, there was a time when the amosphere was good at one time, like when it was Christmas, the kids were not arguing or fighting, and they were getting along. Also, the behavior they had was better than most times, and they were being polite when they needed something.

The land was a very good piece of land, it was as big as Texas, also, there was a bunch of vegetation in the area. The grass was so beautiful, and the leaves were the most wonderful leaves I have ever seen. The land also had more hills, but there was a spring that had the most beautiful waterfall that looked like a big, vanilla ice cream waterfall that made me feel hungry when I looked at the falls.  There was also a few small towns around the area we went to was really, beautiful, until we had to leave.
My front porch symbolizes an oasis to me, especially during the Christmas season when the soft Christmas lights help create an atmosphere of quietness and solitude.  Gently, in the background, the leaves rustle and whisper to each other their appreciation, too, of this seasonal seclusion, seeming to understand that the holiday should truly be about getting back to the real reason for the season. These tall trees stand as sentinels, much like the toy soldiers we have placed along the entrance to our driveway, guarding, protecting, providing a sense of security.  I truly appreciate having my oasis, an oasis from the busy hustle and bustle, an oasis from this materialistic season.

Argument: the right dating age

 Thesis statement:

·         It should be okay to date someone that’s 2 or 3 years younger or older than the other person.

Reason 1:

·         The reason why would be because, if there was a problem with dating someone that would be 2 or 3 years of age, then there would be a set law that you can’t date under or above someone’s age by 4 or more years.

o   Commentary 1: the government and about 52% of the United States would say they wouldn’t pull through with it.

o   Commentary 2: if there would be more complaints about dating someone, then there would be a law, but nobody has a problem, it would just be good to have a relationship with someone that’s 2 or 3 years above or below you because there would never be any doubt in anyone else’s mind about someone dating above or below them that would be 5 or 6 years above or below them.

Reason 2:

·         There are more relationships that is better than someone being more than 3 years older or younger than them.

o   Commentary 1: those types of relationships usually fail more than the other being 2 or 3 years above or below them.

o   Commentary 2: it would make it easier, and more reasonable.

Opposing claim:

·         I don’t think that this would be right, beczuse of all the failed relationships in the world.

Rebuttal:

·         May be true, but if you ask them if that person was good to them, then I can almost bet 9 chances out of 10, the person would say that the relationship was better than the other’s.

My thinking:

·         Nobody cant say that being 2 or 3 years above or below their significant other that their relationships fail all the time, there has to be someone out there that has this same reasoning and thinks the same way anyone would if they believed this.
